Bowls Europe European Mixed Pairs Championships 2023

The inaugural European Mixed Pairs Championships, originally to have taken place in April, but had to be cancelled due to some unforeseen circumstances finally took place at Tenerife Green Bowls, Golf del Sur, Tenerife on 21st to 24th September 2023

The event was sponsored by Blevins Franks, who stepped “into the breach” at the last minute, after another sponsor pulled out at the last minute. Bowls Europe and Tenerife Green Bowls, who have a long standing relationship with Blevins Franks, thank them for doing so.

The local branch of Coca Cola, supplied water for all competitors for every game. This was not only appreciated by TGB and Bowls Europe but by the players who were playing in warm weather.

This Championship was only Bowls Europe Ltd second tournament after it was established in 2021, replacing the former European Bowls Union. Their first tournament was the very well run European International Team Championship in 2022.

The aim of Bowls Europe Fostering, safeguarding, promoting, developing and encouraging the growth of the Sport in Europe – that being the case they decided to form a new Tournament which the smaller nations in Europe, who can’t host large tournaments due to lack of Greens/Rinks the larger tournaments require.

Before, and as Bowls Europe were planning and arranging the tournament, they were determined to include “new approaches”…. Aside from the fact there hasnt been an International Mixed Pairs Tournament in Europe, they also decided they would live stream one game in every round of the competition, whilst ensuring each country would be on the “live stream” rink, on at least one occasion.

Bowls Europe, after much help from Neil Dalrymple (World Bowls CEO) and no small amount of patience and assistance from Richard Savage Solucio, they decided to live score ALL games in, all rounds, with constantly updating tables.

Bowls Europe also decided to go with a new format for the tournament…… The first round consisted of a 9 team league, each country playing each other once, in a 3 set, 5 end, 3 bowl per player, with respotted jack for dead ends. Each team was awarded 1 point for winning an set, ½ each for drawing a set and zero for losing. Winning the most points in the 3 sets awarded the winners 2 points and the losing team 0. If after the 3 sets the set score was tied, the game went to a one end, sudden death play off.

Bowls Europe expected around 14 of its 19 members to play in the championship, unfortunately, due to available decks to play the tournament and the WB WORLD Champions and World Champions only 9 countries entered. This was of course disappointing but understandable, particularly the smaller, self funding countries.

The 9 countries that did take place were early favourites, Ireland (Zoe Stratton & Stephen Kirkwood) and Scotland (Kara Lees & Paul Innes), and also Spain, (The host nation – Lorna Cormack & Graham “Shootsie” Shoots)), Cyprus (Caryn Morris & John McMillan), Netherlands Saskia Schaft & Jan Reinders), Israel (Hadara Segev & Krisztina Szemes), Guernsey (Alison Guillou & Michael Ogier), Hungary (Zoltán Pavelka and Krisztina Szemes), Switzerland (Simone Iseli & Kurt Iseli).
