European bowls championships 2022
Fours and Singles Playoffs -Results-
Following the semi-finals of the ladies’ and gents’ fours and single, the third-place playoffs and finals were played on the afternoon of Thursday 14 July 2022. The players again displayed great bowling and played in a great spirit.
3rd Place Playoffs
Fours
Women
Wales (Lauren Gowan, Alis Butten, Hannah Williams and Bethan Russ) played against England (Emma Cooper, Ruby Hill, Laura Holden and Lorraine Kuhler).
The first 8 ends saw both teams have a see-saw battle with England just edging it 8-7 after the 8th end.
The next 4 ends however belonged to England, scoring a 2,1,3 and 2 shots to take them into a 16-7 lead in the 12 ends.
Pulling the 9 shot deficit with just 3 ends to go was going to be a tough ask for Wales, but they tried valiantly, scoring 3 shows in the next 2 ends. Chasing the game in the last end however saw them drop 3 shots to a very good England team, who ran out 19-10 Winners
3rd Place – England.
Men
Ireland (Arron Tennant, Stuart Bennet, Stephen Kirkwood and Mark Wilson) played against Wales (Martin Clark-Squires, Mark Letman, Chris Ashman and Chris Klefenz).
The opening 6 ends were nip and tuck, with Ireland just edging it 5-4. The next two ends saw Ireland increase that lead t 3 shots, only for Wales to come fighting back to level it at 7-7 in the 10th end.
By the 12th end Ireland had got their noses in front again by 9-8.
With 3 ends to go it really was anybodies game to win. However, Ireland went on to win the last 3 ends, scoring a 2, 1 and 2 to win the game 14-8.
3rd Place – Ireland.

Singles
Women
Wales, represented by Melanie Thomas, played against Israel, represented by Ruthy Gilor.
Ruthy got of to an absolute flier taking a 10-3 lead after 8 ends. In the 9th end Melanie fought back picking up 3 shots, reducing the deficit to 4 shots.
Ruthy then turned up the heat again scoring 8 shots in the next 3 ends to make the score 18-6. Many players may have thrown the towel in at that point, but not Melaniewho by the 17th end had pulled the game back to 18-14.
In the next end 2 ends however, Ruthy steadied the ship scoring 1 shot in each end to make it 20-14.
Melanie still wasn’t finished and managed to pull the score back to 20-17 in the 21st end.
Despite the brave and skilful comeback, in the 22nd end, Ruthy managed to get the single shot she needed to win the game 21-17.
3rd Place – Israel.
Men
In the men’s playoff, the “auld enemy”, Scotland vs. England. Scotland represented by Mark O’Hagan, and England, represented by Jordan Philpot, faced off against one another.
After 8 ends, it was Englands Jordan Philpot who had his nose in front by 6-4.
Scotlands Mark O´Hagan immediately hit back, taking the next 4 ends, scoring a 1,2,1,2 to take a 10-6 lead.
In the 12 end, Jordan immediately hit back, scoring a 4, to level the game again. The game had the markings of a ding-dong battle.
Despite losing the 4, Mark kept his head and put his stamp well and truly on the game, winning a 1,1,3,1,2 in the next 5 ends to take the lead 18-10.
Jordan, valiantly fought on, but Mark was having none of it, going on to win the game 21-13 in the 21st end.
3rd Place – Scotland.
